On a Mission

Not me, I have easier things to do. But Pen was. On a mission. Successfully.

I had not had a good night. Sleep was a stranger last night… one that did not visit me. Or that is how it felt.

It was not helped by my feeling too hot! The CH was now working overtime and I like a cool bedroom. The fixer yesterday had been a bit over enthusiastic when he adjusted the bedroom radiator thermostat – I only need minimal heat, not the full blast furnace that was in operation. I had been warned not to turn the radiator control to zero because there was a fault with it, which would mean a further and more costly repair if it were to be turned off. 1 was fine. 0 would not be fine. Since the light was not great down by the radiator control, and I could not see what I was doing, I turned the digistat down and cool returned.

The day ahead stretched out before me with little pressure. Sharon would come to clean, or so I hoped.

The washing I had put in the tumble drier was not really dry so I wondered if the mysterious red flashing light was trying to tell me of a problem. Instead, I draped it over the heated towel rails to help it sort itself out.

I can’t really remember what I did early on in the day, probably not much. Ah … my memory is returning … Pen’s mission – then sorting out rubbish in its various pockets around the house and carefully combining it for further collections. Watching the bin men, take the leaf mountain away , leaving the bin ready for more of the same once the remaining leaves are finally released by the branches they cling to, gave me satisfaction Rain overnight precluded any mower activity. I don’t need much of an excuse.

I crafted and waited for Sharon, my cleaner to turn up, which she did, proffering me a £5 note which she owed Ali and Dave. I promptly returned it to her as part of her payment from me. And then notified the Illis that I owed them £5. It has now gone into the petrol fund. But at least they know it is not Sharon who owes them a fiver.

We had the usual chat as she worked around me. I’m not sure she noticed I had minimally improved my organisation of the utility room.

She confirmed through description that Burt was present when Wendy moaned about her car in the alleyway. I’m not prepared to tolerate such blatant lying. But as my daughters would say, I must not let its negative energy consume me. The idiot just needed to say nothing but could not resist lying.

Not long after Sharon’s arrival, I gathered up H and she told me she wanted to go to Pangbourne, so we did. Despite the overnight rain, the terrain was walkable and it was not cold. In fact, in the sun it was really warm, almost T shirt weather. The light was striking.

By the time we arrived home, it was mid afternoon. I had purchased a few goodies to help me tide myself over until we go away on Tuesday. I’m quite excited. I love mid Wales having holidayed there for so many years; parts are quite remote.

The weather forecast due next week reflects a sharp drop in temperatures and the possibility of snow on hills. Well, in mid Wales, they don’t have hills, they have mountains, proper job mountains. I’ve been there in snow and it is not to be recommended.
The utterly stunning route via Llanidloes, Llangurig, Staylittle, Dylife and Clywedog Reservoir needs avoiding if there is a hint of snow. Plynlimon is bleak in its beauty – the site where red kites were first released way back, long before someone thought of doing so in the Chilterns. You drop down into the lovely town of Machynlleth- try pronouncing that.
There was a train crash nearby a few weeks ago.

As for Pen’s mission – it involved pursuing the company behind the deceptive website from which I thought I was buying John Lewis vouchers a few weeks ago. As a thank you to my girls for looking after me during my kidney rock travails. Everywish, it was called . Discretely AKA Wunschgutschein GmbH.

Helpfully obstructive for tracing emails from them. The system they use to allow customers to access the vouchers purchased, is tortuous and equally obstructive, and time limited, craftily calculated to deter people from cashing in. I gave up, assuming I had been scammed. I had even contacted them awhile back about my difficulties. But Pen did not give up.

Today she was on a mission. A very successful mission – all vouchers were redeemed and quickly spent, less they disappear. She has new pyjamas and Ali has a new coat. So all is good.

Thank you Pen, enjoy your pyjamas.

Reading the reviews tells me I am one of many people to feel deceived. Not least, because if you Google John Lewis gift cards, this is the site that pops up first. So it’s easy to assume it is the way to purchase a JL gift card because it is supported by John Lewis. They really need to remove themselves from the list of Everywish outlets.

I have learnt a salutary lesson.m

Friday looks like a peaceful day. I have plenty to get on with. Art workshop on Saturday only half a day.

Thought for the Day
