Surprise!

I slept very badly last night- mostly because my shoulder / arm was very achey and Icould not get comfortable. I took an ibuprofen which is very rare for me. It didn’t make any difference which is probably why I don’t take it. A paracetamol helped later.
The weather was a surprise too. Another torrent of rain fell overnight ( probably because I had watered the garden the evening before). And it was very windy.

Eventually the sullen rain gave way to sunny intervals and, later, the further west I went on my journey , the better the weather became. No rain, and a sunny disposition prevailed.

Before leaving the local area, I took H to stretch her legs and have a little chat with Tony on Lardon Chase. Streatley Hill and crossroads are finally open to all comers after the hiccups and recent very inconvenient closures.

It was fresh and sunny up there and the gorse is blooming. And as for the wind…

We set off for Dunster, near Minehead, along the A303. Traffic was light and the journey uneventful, arriving at Dunster Beach just before 15.00.

The beach was not busy… sand was flying around and I really didn’t fancy it so I took H for a quick wee and ate my salad in the car.

We then drove to Dunster itself and checked in at the Luttrell Arms hotel. We stayed there twice over the last two years and were very happy there. My room is lovely with its own little sunken patio area and with direct access to the garden – up some quite steep steps. At the top of these is a board pointing to the dog walk outside the hotel grounds towards the castle . And it was there that H and I pottered around for a bit.

It was then time to return to the room for a little organisation and relaxation. There is plenty of space in the room, tea and coffee facilities and a fridge. Just perfect. And a doggy bed and bowls are provided.

I was snuggling down for a snooze when there was a knocking on the door. Once I managed to remove the safety chain, no easy task, I found Pen on the other side of it. What a surprise!

She had been going to come on Tuesday anyway but splashed out and is staying the night here. This is her second visit because the whole Robert’s family escaped the Coronation with us here, last year.

We had tea, went for a wander round Dunster Main Street with H and enjoyed the upper garden in the shelter of a pod.
Supper followed, which was extremely delicious, then I was made to play Scrabble, but Pen remained unsatisfied until she had ordered the cheese and biscuits.

It is a very friendly hotel, with friendly staff and clientele, most of whom seem to have dogs of various shapes and sizes. It is also very comfortable and the food is excellent. And it is quite busy- considering the tone of year.

I suppose I could call this area and hotel one of my happy places. It brings back memories of our homeless existence in 2020 when we stayed in Minehead and got to know Exmoor a bit and also of the two previous stays here were great.
