A bit of an Adventure

I slept well in the chair and not so well in bed- but then I caught up with some TV and started reading my latest book which is about Cyprus. More later.
There was no hurry to get myself up, though the day had dawned dry, with hints of sunshine.
H was not in a hurry either.
I decided we would head for the gravel paths of Padworth Common, that I discovered the other week, a few miles nearer than Greenham. Ha ha. A combination of flooding, fallen trees and the reconstruction of Aldermaston Wharf led to various road closures and frustration on my part. Quite an adventure by the time I had finished.

I had no idea where I was, but we managed a very pleasant walk through the forest on fairly mud free tracks.

Finding our way back to the Bath Road (A4) provided yet more fun, but we got there in the end. And this was after following a line of vehicles through a flimsy police barrier which ‘guarded’ a road, where a tree had been sawn up, since we were there earlier.

I cooked a late lunch and fell asleep for a bit. I awoke and ignored the growing pile of paperwork requiring my attention.

But I did turn my attention to an email from Shell Energy (now Octopus) . This stated they had not had a meter reading from us for 3 years (wrong- it was read in December, amongst other occasions) and their records showed I owed around £43,000. I briefly thought about calling their bluff, apologising for my oversight and by offering to pay £40,000 now and the remainder in 6 months.

The trouble is this was a very plausible email where the scammers appear to have copied and pasted accurate information from Shell, including emergency and help numbers and information into their own scam email.

Hovering over the email address revealed a fairly plausible sender address. But, digging deeper, there was a fatal flaw- my online account shows I’m in credit and when my meter was last read. (19/12/23) I therefore blocked this sender.

Also, a later search of my email boxes for Shell Energy, showed a succession of blocked emails from this sender, whilst genuine emails could be opened and read. And the sender address differed.

Clever though. I just hope I did not inadvertently click something to compromise my account.
Storm Jocelyn will arrive with heavy rain tomorrow followed by overnight wind.

No rest it seems. We have experienced 9 named storms this winter, compared with two last winter.

Wendy had accosted me upon my return from our adventure, saying she wanted to start swimming but lacked the confidence to go on her own. I explained I hadn’t been for a while (apart from my Devon dip) but was thinking of going again soon. Oh what fun it would be to swim with Wendy!

Thought for the Day

À propos of absolutely nothing…
