Our crossing might have been bumpy because it was windy, but that didn’t disturb me. I just did not sleep that well. The cabin was perfectly spacious and comfortable.
I was slightly concerned about getting across Athens early in the morning, in the dark, but in the end, I only took one wrong turn which was easily rectified. Well, scarily rectified.
We arrived at Piraeus in pitch darkness and the sky slowly lightened the further east we drove. Once we were out of the immediate vicinity of the port and its narrow roads, the roads widened, but the road markings were completely worn away, so positioning the car was not straightforward. Even it’s little computer that uses markings to help you, couldn’t sort that out.
We were soon on the newer Attiki Odos and away.
We took H for a quick stroll at Marathon Beach. The wind was very very strong but she did what she needed to.

And then we returned to Neos Voutsas to Tina and Vangelis’. There, at the front, the wind gusted really powerfully, screaming up the hill. H was – 1. not too impressed at being left outside on the patio, and 2. Very impressed at the number of very sweet cats. Brekki disappointed. T made do with a heap of digestive biscuits. I had a few biscotti. We chatted and handed over the liquid green gold.
And then T and I headed for Schinias where we gave H a run. Such is the environmental concern for Schinias that it is now a no go place for cars, evidenced by no entry signs. Even to park. But we adopted the Greek approach and ignored the signs. It was calmer here and we sunned ourselves on a bit of tree trunk. It is only about 6 years ago that there were pop up restaurants (big ones) and loads of cars parked up on the shady bits of track. And their occupants used the scrubby hinterland as a toilet. Disgusting.
About 5 years ago the authorities destroyed the restaurants – apparently they were set up illegally. And since then have slowly restored the area to nature. It was here, at Schinias, that the Athenians took stock of the Persian fleet.

H ran around and paddled and snuffled…
We returned to Tina’s for a tasty lunch and then checked in at Cabo Verde. We received a wonderful ‘hello again’ welcome from the receptionist and we had been upgraded to a much bigger room with direct views over the little harbour. We have a vast picture window in front of the bed which allows us to look directly over the sea to Evvia. Could stay there all day! And what a wonderful gift to be given for our last night in Greece.

I fell asleep for quite a while, catching up on last night I think.
Disorientation was my experience when I woke up. T had been busy unpacking the wheelie bag and exploring its contents.
We returned for lovely beans and potatoes to the family home. And then back to our bolt hole. H finally decided she would produce a wee on some suitably scruffy grass in Mati. Parking is tricky here as it is on street. So loading and unloading the car is tricky. I will improve things outside the family hom.

Sun am – an extra hour to enjoy the view! Yeaterday the wind screamed across our balcony and the sea was turbulent. Now its calm and the waves are softly kissing the sand.
It has been a long, hard night /day… I will miss Crete.
